What is the best way to interface Verify QC to my LD6 units?

Note that these steps are only applicable for LD6 versions 8 or 50 or 101. If required see How do I tell which version of LD6 I have?

Verify QC requires both GNSS raw data and RTCM correction data from the LD6. Both of these data streams are available using either a LAN or serial interface.

The preferred method of interfacing the LD6 to Verify QC is via a LAN connection. This is technically more efficient, simplifies cabling and leaves more ports spare on the Verify QC computer for output interfaces. It also ensures that adequate data rates are available over all cable lengths normally used for vessel installations (with appropriate cable, lengths of up to 100m are acceptable.)

By default, the upper and lower LAN ports on the LD6 have static IPs with values of 192.168.2.2 and 192.168.2.3 respectively. For the simplest and most reliable configuration, it is recommended that the Verify QC computer should not be connected to an external network. It should be connected directly to the LD6 using a network crossover cable and the default static IPs should be used.

Full configuration details for this "Basic" network interface are provided in a separate FAQ.  Another FAQ describes a method for interfacing dual-beam RTCM data (from two LD6 units) to the Verify QC computer over a single LAN connection.

If the Verify QC computer is already connected to an external network, it is still possible to interface the LD6 over the LAN via a switch or router.  It will be necessary to reconfigure the LD6 port to use a dynamically assigned or custom static IP.

Veripos do not recommend this configuration for critical operations since it is impossible to predict the effect of other network components.  This type of interface should only be used where the user has full control over the network and sufficient networking expertise to anticipate the effects of possible interactions.  Unless these conditions can be met, the LD6 should be interfaced using serial connections.

The LD6 has fourteen serial interface ("COM") ports which can be configured to use either the RS232 or RS422 protocols. The RS232 protocol is used by default. The RS422 protocol is normally reserved for long cable runs or for electrically noisy environments.  By default, one of these ports is preconfigured to output GNSS Raw data and two ports are configured to output RTCM data. Full configuration for a standard serial interface are provided in a separate FAQ.

Cabling

The LD6 serial interface ("COM") and network interface ("LAN") ports all use RJ45 connectors.

All LAN interconnections should be made using standard Cat5e network cables.  As noted above, a network crossover cable is required when connecting the LD6 directly to the Verify QC computer.  Veripos can supply a short crossover adapter which may be extended using a standard network cable.

When using serial connections, adapters are usually required to convert between the RJ45 connectors on the LD6 and the 9-pin D-Type connectors used on most computers. Veripos supply three 1 metre adapter cables with each LD6 unit.  These may be extended using either a standard (9 pin D-Type) RS232 cable or a standard network cable and 1:1 RJ45 coupler.

Additional adapters may be purchased from Veripos or may assembled by the client using standard D9 Modular Adapters.  (Wiring details are provided in a separate FAQ.)
